Winter Health Tips for the Frigid NJ Months

January 14, 2019

At this time of the year, it is necessary to prevent diseases and respiratory poisoning. In particular, measures of care and symptoms of infants, children, pregnant women and the elderly should be maximized. At My Doc Urgent Care, we are committed to providing quality care and preventative tips for our community.

  1. Wash your hands with soap and water after returning from the street, before cooking and eating, and after going to the bathroom or changing diapers.
  2. In women with newborn babies, it is necessary to maintain breastfeeding until the baby is at least 6 months old.
  3. Have the vaccines included in the National Vaccination Calendar up to date to reduce health complications and mortality from respiratory infections, especially in children, pregnant women, people with chronic diseases, and older adults.
  4. Ventilate all rooms daily: You must leave permanent ventilation in each room. It is essential to always keep a window or a door open in the heated rooms, even if it is cold.
  5. Do not smoke and keep smoke-free environments. Tobacco use affects the respiratory tract. In addition, exposure to tobacco smoke is associated with respiratory complications because it contains heavy metals and carcinogenic substances.
  6. You must have prevention and care especially in pregnant women, the elderly, babies, and children. It is important to be alert to the first symptoms of a respiratory infection to treat them early and prevent them from getting worse.
  7. Do not self-medicate. The consumption of remedies without a prescription can cause intoxication and hide the symptoms of the disease, hindering a correct diagnosis and worsening the clinical picture.
  8. Hydrate the skin. It is a little-known practice, however, specialists recommend hydrating the skin. Consult your trusted specialist doctor to recommend the most appropriate moisturizer according to your skin type.
  9. Be careful with your lips. The cold tends to dry and crack the skin of our lips, and many of us have the habit of wetting them with our own spit. It is a bad habit that we should stop doing during the winter since with the saliva we damage the thin protective layer that our lips produce naturally. It is advisable that during the low-temperature season we use lip balms or balsams, with this, we assure our lips the necessary protection and hydration.
  10. Take care of the temperature inside your home. The New York Department of Health notes that, according to WHO, the ideal temperature inside a home should be maintained between 64 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit on average. If you have at home with people with health problems, consult your medical specialist to find out what temperature is ideal for them.

At My Doc Urgent Care, it is our greatest wish that our community has a happy and healthy 2019. By following the information provided, you can prevent and treat respiratory diseases from harming your family and friends. Walk-ins are always welcome and we accept most insurance plans and self-pay options. Stop in today at 210 Passaic Street. Garfield, NJ 07026 or call us at (201) GET-WELL.
